Meet Jon Limmer, known professionally as J. Limm, a professional audio engineer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, and music producer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and co-owner of The Sound Box Recording Studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

 

Jon’s journey into audio began in 2005 at just 16 years old, when he first discovered music production and began experimenting with beat-making, recording, and mixing. What started as curiosity quickly developed into a lifelong passion for sound and audio engineering.

 

He later attended The Institute of Production and Recording, earning an AAS degree in Audio Production, Engineering, and Audio Post Production. This education expanded his foundation in recording, mixing, mastering, and audio post-production for both music and multimedia.

 

In 2016, Jon relocated from Nebraska to Iowa after being brought on to help build and shape The Sound Box Recording Studio alongside longtime collaborator and friend Richard Shultz. Since then, he has become a key engineer and co-owner, helping grow the studio into a creative hub for artists across the Midwest.

 

With over 21 years of experience and 250+ artists worked with, Jon has worked across hip-hop, rock, pop, country, metal, EDM, and singer-songwriter genres, as well as audiobooks, podcasts, and commercial music production. His work also extends into film and television audio post-production, including contributions to Chicago Fire, with experience in ADR, Foley, and full post workflows.

 

Jon is a four-time Iowa Music Awards winner, earning:

• Audio Engineer of the Year (2022 & 2024)

• Producer of the Year (2023 & 2024)

 

Working from The Sound Box Recording Studio, Jon uses Pro Tools and Logic Pro alongside high-end analog and digital tools including Rupert Neve Designs Portico II MBP, the WesAudio ngTubeEQ, and Apollo x8P interfaces. His plugin arsenal includes Waves, Universal Audio, FabFilter, iZotope, Slate Digital, Melodyne, and Antares.

 

Jon’s approach to mixing and production is fully intentional and artist-driven. He does not rely on templates or preset chains—instead, every mix is built from the ground up by ear, ensuring each project receives a unique, purpose-driven sound.

 

Artists choose Jon for his relaxed, collaborative workflow, strong attention to detail, and ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality. His goal is simple: to deliver major-label-quality sound while preserving the artist’s original vision.

 

Outside of the studio, Jon enjoys spending time outdoors, with family, and drawing inspiration for his next project.
